"My Maine Moose Hunt" By Marty Gene Waters

Written March 28, 2007

My Maine Moose Hunt was simply a dream come true for me.  I was especially happy when my wife called me at work and stated that our mailbox was filled with moose hunting outfitters solicitations.  I knew immediately I must have been successful at getting a tag after several years of unsucessful attempts.  I also know that my odds were diminished by the fact that I am from North Carolina and out of state.

After receiving confirmaed notification that I had indeed been selected to receive a tag for a bull moose in hunting district 8.  I then carefully contacted a number of outfitters before finally electing "Enchanted Outfitters" out of West Forks, Maine.

I had requested that Master Maine Guide, Craig Hallock take me and he stated that he would do his best to make our trip a success.  He also stated that he had seen some very good bulls this particular year.

I was excited and got our list of articles from the ourfitters and I was accompanied by my friend, Chris Bowman and my father M. Gene Waters.  The fact that I got to have my dad along with me for this experience made the trip even more memorable and special to me.

Once we arrived at the Enchanted Outfitters lodge we were greeted by a friendly lady named Gloria Hewey.  She would become our surrogate mother throughout the week and provide meals, linen and any other articles we happened to forget.  She and Craig were very helpful in directed us greenhorns around the Maine woods.  They truly gave us 100% dedication and effort.  Man, did it ever payoff!

I told Craig that I came up for a nice animal, otherwise I would prefer to not harvest.  He stated he felt that if I had patience we would have success.  To make a long story short, we bagged a bull moose that scored 162 2/8.  Better than anything I had imagined.  According to the officials at the weigh station it was the largest taken in that area in approximately 3 years.

The Maine moose is a tremendous game animal which I have learned to respect.  The power, size, gracefulness, and their ability to disappear and blend into it's environment is extraordinary.  I feel honored to have been given the chance to successfully hunt and harvest this majestic North American mammal.
